214 deaths due to acute encephalitis syndrome in India
At least 241 people have been killed so far due to an outbreak of brain inflammation in India's Assam.
India's Deputy Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Ashwini Kumar Choubey said 214 people had died so far due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome, known in the country as "brain inflammation."
Encephalitis Syndrome manifests itself with symptoms such as sudden onset headache, high fever, disorientation, coma, tremors, and contractions.
During the monsoon season, when humidity and temperature rise to high levels in the country, diseases such as malaria, typhoid fever and inflammation of the brain are spreading and becoming an epidemic.
Encephalitis syndrome appears in several parts of the country and in July 110 people died due to the disease according to a report released by the National Health Mission. At least 477 people have been admitted to hospitals so far because of encephalitis case, the report said.
There was an outbreak of brain inflammation in the country last year, 94 out of the 509 people affected by the disease had died.
