36 irregular migrants nabbed in Turkey’s capital, police say

The irregular migrants were nabbed in a van by security teams in the Gölbaşı district of Ankara, the capital of Turkey, the Provincial Police Department said in a statement on Friday.

Among the migrants were 23 Afghan, 9 Pakistani, and 4 Bangladeshi nationals, the statement said.

3 human traffickers were also arrested in the operation, the statement noted.

It added that the necessary procedures for the deportation of irregular migrants had been initiated.

Historically, Turkey has been a country of origin, transit, and destination for migrants and was a crossroads between Europe and Asia.

Recent regional events have contributed to Turkey increasingly becoming a major destination and transit country for those fleeing conflict, poverty, and disasters.

Turkey hosts one of the largest migrant and refugee populations in the world.

According to the official reports, 113,865 irregular migrants held across the country in 2020.
