7 alleged members of Hizbuttahrir arrested in southeastern Turkey

Turkish police arrested Tuesday seven suspects linked to Hizbuttahrir Islamic group in Turkey’s southeastern Gaziantep province.

The suspects were detained on the charges of distributing the March issue of “Köklü Değişim” magazine, which has a cover that featured a call for the re-establishment of the Caliphate.

“After the detentions in Sanliurfa, 7 Muslims were detained in raids on their homes in Gaziantep this morning on the charges of distributing the March issue of ‘Köklü Değişim’ magazine, which has a cover that featured a call for the re-establishment of the Caliphate, and bringing up the subject of the Caliphate during their visits,” tweeted Mahmut Kar, the head of the Hizb-ut Tahrir Turkey Media Office.

Hizb ut-Tahrir (the Party of Liberation) is an international Islamic organization whose stated aim is the re-establishment of the Islamic Caliphate to unite the Muslim community.

The party was founded in 1953 as a political organization in Jerusalem, the capital of Palestine state, by Taqi al-Din al-Nabhani, an Islamic scholar from Haifa who was educated in Egypt and served as a religious court judge (Qadi) in Palestine.

The party rejects the use of violence to bring about political change.
