At least 15 village defense volunteers were killed and four were wounded in a late-night shooting at a security checkpoint in Thailand's Muslim-majority south, security officials said on Wednesday.

The attack conducted during night targeted a security checkpoint in southern Yala province.

The assailants also used explosives and scattered nails on roads to delay pursuers late on Tuesday night in what authorities described as the deadliest gun attack in years.
