Catalan leader taken into custody

Former President of Catalonia Autonomous Administration Carles Puigdemont was detained in Germany.

The German police reportedly took Former President of Catalonia Autonomous Administration Carles Puigdemont into custody after crossing the German-Danish border. Puigdemont's lawyer Jaume Alonso Cuevillas announced it through the twitter account.

Lawyer Alonso-Cuevillas, who did not give details of where exactly Puigdemont was detained, explained that the Catalan leader was taken into custody when returning from Finland to Belgium.

On Friday, the Supreme Court of Spain issued an international arrest warrant for 13 Catalan leaders, including Puigdemont. The 13 leaders who will be tried for "insurrection" charges up to 25 years in prison.

An independence referendum was held in Catalonia on 1 October 2017 and the autonomous Catalan parliament declared unilateral independence on 27 October. The same day, the Spanish government abolished the Catalan parliament, and the state had an early election on December 21st.

Puigdemont fled to Belgium with four former ministers after an investigation launched against him followed the unilateral declaration of independence on October 27. The Supreme Court of Spain issued an arrest warrant for these politicians across Europe.
