Some members of the American Senate asked Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, to testify. The Massachusetts attorney general has launched an investigation into the matter.

Christopher Wylie, who worked with a Cambridge University academic to obtain the data, said: "We exploited Facebook to harvest millions of people’s profiles. And built models to exploit what we knew about them and target their inner demons. That was the basis the entire company was built on."

Wylie said that during the presidential elections in 2016, the personal information of 50 million Facebook users was manipulated to give political messages.
