Death toll rises 9 in train crash in Ankara
At least 9 people lost their lives and dozens more injured as the high-speed train crashed with another locomotive in Turkiye's capital Ankara.
A high-speed train traveling between Ankara and Konya, a central province of Turkiye, collided with another locomotive at Marşandiz station reportedly killing 9 people, injuring 47 others on Thursday.
Providing information about the crash, which the train hit into a pedestrian overpass and mangled it, Minister of Transport Cahit Turhan announced that 9 people lost their lives, including 3 mechanistic while 47 others injured.
"Departed from Ankara station to Konya at 06.36, the train collided head-on with another locomotive this morning in Yenimahalle district, caused a painful accident," said Turhan.
"According to the determination at the site of the accident at the time of 10.00, 8 people lost their lives including 3 mechanic and 5 passengers. 48 passengers have been rushed to the hospital, one of them has unfortunately died in the hospital," he added.
Prosecutors have launched an investigation into the crash.
