Death toll rises to 54 in Florida condo collapse
8 more bodies were recovered from the rubble, local officials said, while 86 people still missing.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said that the search and rescue effort for live victims in the rubble that was once Champlain Towers South came to an end.
“It’s with profound sadness that tonight we transition our operation from search and rescue to search and recovery. May God bring peace to all whose hearts have been broken, and may He watch over our community in the hard days ahead,” she tweeted.
86 people are unaccounted for at Champlain Towers South, though not all are confirmed to have been in the building when it fell.
On June 24, at approximately 1:25 a.m. EDT, Champlain Towers South, a 12-story beachfront condominium in the Miami suburb of Surfside, Florida, United States, partially collapsed.
Long-term degradation of reinforced concrete support structures in the underground parking garage due to water penetration and corrosion of the reinforcing steel is being considered as a factor (or the cause) of the collapse.
