Flash floods in Indonesia's eastern Papua province have killed at least 77 people, the disaster agency said Monday as it raised the death toll from 50.

In Indonesia, known as tsunami, landslide and flood zone, the flood occurred in Papua province because of the precipitation that started on Friday and continued by increasing its violence. At least 77 people confirmed dead so far while dozens are missing.

Search and rescue work continues in the region when there is fear for the increase of death toll and the number of wounded people.

Disaster authorities have warned local governments of flash flood risks due to deforestation in the mountains surrounding the town, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the national disaster agency.

Hundreds of people in the region are waiting to be evacuated.
