Iraq: Death toll from hospital fire rises to 40
At least 40 people were killed in a fire at a hospital where coronavirus patients were being treated in Baghdad.
More than 60 patients' relatives reportedly suffered injuries because of a lack of oxygen due to intense smoke from the fire at Ibn al-Hatip Hospital.
The cause of the fire is not known but the Iraqi Civil Defense Directorate said extinguishing work in the hospital was complete and an investigation into the incident was launched.
Three days of mourning declared in Iraq after the disaster.
According to Iraq’s health ministry, the total number of people infected with COVID-19 in the country is 1,025,288 including 15,217 deaths.
