Iraqi Parliament elects the new president
The Iraqi Parliament elected Barham Ahmet Salih, the candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), as the new President.
The Iraqi Parliament elected Berhem Ahmet Salih as the new President of Iraq. The Iraqi Assembly made a session on Tuesday to elect the president. 301 deputies from 329 deputies participated in the vote.
In the first session, Salih received 156 votes, while the candidate of the Kurdistan Democratic Party [KDP] led by Massoud Barzani received 89 votes.
After the first round of votes, a second round was about to be made because the candidates could not get enough votes. However, the candidate of the Democratic Party of Kurdistan (KDP), Fuad Huseyin, withdrew from the race.
While the second session was not held after Fuat Hussein withdrew from his candidacy, Barham Ahmet Salih, the candidate of the party of former Iraqi President Jalal Talabani's party, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan [PUK], was elected as the 4th President of Iraq.
