Lebanon: At least 22 people killed in fuel tanker explosion
At least 22 people were killed and 79 more injured when a fuel tanker exploded in Akkar in northern Lebanon early on Sunday morning.
“Our teams have transported 22 dead bodies and more than 79 injured from the fuel tanker explosion in Akkar to hospitals in the area,” the Lebanese Red Cross said.
The explosion happened while the Lebanese security forces were distributing gasoline from a confiscated fuel tanker, according to local sources.
On 4 August 2020, a large amount of ammonium nitrate stored at the Port of Beirut, the capital city of Lebanon, exploded, causing at least 218 deaths, 7,500 injuries, and US$15 billion in property damage, and leaving an estimated 300,000 people homeless.
