Ikhwan al-Muslimeen [Muslim Brotherhood] released an official statement on the martyrdom of Mohamed Morsi, the only elected president of Egypt.

"Today, Mohamed Morsi, the first elected civilian president in the history of Egypt, ascended to martyr in defense of the people's right to freedom, sovereignty, and dignified life," Ikhwan said.

"He was martyred in one of the futile trials that they inflicted on him; the last moments of his life bear witness to his steadfastness, patience, and heroism in the face of betrayal and treachery. He was a symbol of freedom against dictatorship and despotism."

"The martyr will remain the icon of the glorious, the statement read. "He will be remembered by history as one of the greatest leaders of Egypt who presented the finest images of sacrifice and redemption for Egypt's freedom and independence.

Ikhwan stated that Morsi will remain one of the greatest leaders of the nation who sacrificed their lives for their nation.
