Mosaics smuggled to the US, back home in Gaziantep
The pieces of the "Gypsy Girl" mosaic, brought from the USA to Turkiye Tuesday and kept at Istanbul airport due to the fog, reached Gaziantep, southeast of Turkiye, on Wednesday.
The missing parts of the "Gypsy Girl", which smuggled to the USA in 1960 was brought back to the home in Turkiye after a long break.
The "Gypsy Girl" mosaics are part of Zeugma Antique City, which was built on 20,000 acres of land in the District of Nizip in Gaziantep, east of Turkiye, one of the important symbols of the city extracted in 1998.
The 12 pieces of Zeugma mosaics, which have been stolen 53 years ago to Bowling Green State University in Ohio State, USA, were brought to Turkiye on Tuesday by plane.
The missing pieces, smuggled from Gaziantep 53 years ago, include young satir, pan mask, female theatre mask, Indian peacock, Maenad mask and bird with plant branches in its beak, which are considered the pieces forming the surrounding of the Gypsy Girl Mosaic.
The parts will be opened to visitors in the temporary area of the "Gypsy Girl" and then placed in their permanent places.
Packed in special crates, the pieces were taken from the aircraft to the Zeugma Mosaic Museum to be merged with the mosaic.
Commenting on the subject, the Mayor of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Fatma Şahin said the longing for 50 years is over, which made them happy, excited and proud.
