Nearly half of the Syrian refugee children cannot go to school

Only 651 thousand of the 1 million 47 thousand Syrian refugees in the education age are able to access schools in Turkiye.

Responding to the question asked by CHP Niğde Deputy Ömer Fethi Gürer, Turkish Education Minister Ziya Selcuk stated that only 651,000 of 1,047,000 Syrian refugee children can go to school across the country.

Syrian refugee children have been training in 223 temporary education centers in 19 Turkish provinces, added Minister Selçuk.

"In the 2018-2019 academic year, the number of registered Syrian students in e-school and Foreign Student Information Operating System [YÖBIS] is 632,888," said Turkish education minister by adding that the number of Syrian volunteer trainers is 12,663 as of October.

Within the scope of the project to support the integration of Syrian children into Turkish education system [PICTES], Minister Selçuk said guidance and psychological counseling services for Syrian students have been carried out under temporary protection added that in 23 provinces where the project is carried out, 500 guidance counselors are serving.

Based on data provided by Directorate General of Migration Management in September 2018, Minister Selçuk stated that 1 million 047 thousand 536 Syrian children in Turkiye are at the age of education [5-17 years].
