“We can confirm an explosion outside Kabul airport. Casualties are unclear at this time. We will provide additional details when we can,” tweeted John Kirby, Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs.

The explosion, which was followed by gunfire at the Hamid Karzai International Airport, occurred near the Baron hotel, where British troops and journalists have been staying.

There are casualties and fatalities, according to local media outlets.
