Peru election: Castillo calls on his supporters not to respond provocations

With 99 percent of votes cast in Sunday's presidential poll counted, leftist Castillo held a narrow lead of 50.20 percent over right-wing populist rival Keiko Fujimori's 49.80 percent.

“Dear brothers and sisters, I thank those who continue to resist in the streets. Let us not fall into provocations by those who want to see this country in chaos. Therefore, we call for peace and tranquility. Let us remain firm and joyful in this final struggle that belongs to all Peruvians,” Castillo tweeted.

Although Fujimori asked the National Electoral Tribunal (JNE) to annul the results of 802 polling stations, the equivalent of 200,000 votes, Peruvian authorities dismissed any possibility of counting fraud.

Castillo is currently ahead by about 71,440 votes. As ballots are still being tallied, the process ia expected to take 10 to 12 days to be fully resolved, according to the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE).
