Portugal's state council decides to dissolve parliament after 2022 budget rejected
Portugal’s Council of State approved President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa's proposal to dissolve the parliament after the rejection of the government's 2022 budget bill at the parliament.
A majority of council members approved the president’s proposal, according to a Portuguese presidency statement.
The president still needs to sign the dissolution decree in order to pave the way for a snap election in the country.
The Council of State is a body established by the Portuguese Constitution to advise the President of the Republic in the exercise of many of his discretionary powers.
