President Erdoğan voices his support for Maduro
"We are with you," President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told Maduro in a phone call, according to presidency spokesman Ibrahim Kalın. "My brother Maduro. Stay strong, we are by your side."
Turkish presidency spokesman Ibrahim Kalın shared comment through social media on Juan Guido, the president of the National Assembly in Venezuela, who declared himself as the "interim president" of the country.
The pledges of support came after opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself "interim president" of Venezuela.
"We are with you," President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told Maduro in a phone call, according to the presidency spokesman Ibrahim Kalın. "My brother Maduro. Stay strong, we are by your side."
Erdoğan noted that the democratic process must be respected. "As a country that believes in democracy, wherever in the world there is a coup attempt, we stand against them all without distinction. Everyone has to respect the result of the ballot boxes."
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro also announced that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had telephoned him and forwarded his support.
"The Turkish president called me. The people of Turkiye are with the people of Venezuela. Today is a historic day," Maduro said during his balcony speech.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu found it "very strange" that Guaido declared himself president despite the country already having an elected leader in Maduro.
"And some countries recognized him. This situation may lead to chaos," Çavuşoğlu added.
