2 killed, 6 injured in road accident in eastern Turkey

Two people were killed and six others were injured after a truck crashed into a car on the Bitlis-Tatvan highway on Monday.

According to the initial reports, one person in the car and the driver of the truck died at the scene.

Ambulances, police, and fire crews were dispatched to the scene after the accident had been reported to the officials.

The injured were rushed to hospitals in Bitlis, local sources reported.

The officers were investigating how the crash happened.

Traffic accidents claim thousands of lives every year in Turkey. According to figures by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), 4,866 people were killed in traffic accidents and another 226,266 people suffered injuries in the country last year.

One-third of the accidents stem from drivers exceeding speed limits.
