Afghan President Ashraf Gani announced that the operations against the Taliban will be halted until the end of Ramadan. It is stated that the ceasefire that will last from June 12-19 does not cover the DAESH.
Speaking in Afghanistan's State Television, President Gani suggested that the government proved its will and willpower in providing a "peaceful solution" to the country. Taliban did not comment on ceasefire announcement.
Gani proposed to recognize the Taliban as a legitimate political party to end the 16-year war in February. The release of Taliban prisoners, inclusion in the elections and consideration of the Constitution were among the suggestions.
The Taliban said it was open to direct talks with the United States rather than the Afghan government for a "peaceful settlement", while the US administration increased air operations against the Taliban.
Last week, US commander General John Nicholson said they have secret talks with the Taliban for a possible ceasefire, but the Taliban refused the charges.
