Argentina declares national mourning after death toll from coronavirus exceeds 100,000

The government of Argentina has decreed five days of national mourning after the country’s death toll from the coronavirus pandemic surpassed 100,000 since the start of the pandemic in March last year.

“National mourning throughout the territory of the Argentine Republic for a term of five days, as a consequence of the death of more than 100,000 people, inhabitants of our country, victims of COVID-1,” said the decree, which was published on Thursday in the Official Gazette.

During the days of mourning the National Flag will remain hoisted at half-mast in all public buildings, according to the decree.

As of 14 July 2021, a total of 4,702,594 people were confirmed to have been infected, and 100,250 people were known to have died because of the virus in Argentina.
