At least 18 people killed after roof collapses at crematorium in northern India

Eighteen people were killed on Sunday after a roof collapsed at a crematorium in the Muradnagar town of Ghaziabad district, Uttar Pradesh.

The roof reportedly collapsed when around 100 people had taken shelter at the structure while it was raining, according to local media reports.

The victims were attending the funeral procession of a local resident of Dayanand Colony, who died on Saturday, when the incident took place.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences to relatives of the victims.

“The sad news of the unfortunate accident in Muradnagar, Uttar Pradesh, has caused great sorrow. The state government is engaged in relief and rescue work. I express my condolences to the relatives of those who lost their lives in this accident, as well as wish the injured to get well soon,” Modi tweeted.
