"Barbaric" asylum law in France

In France, the new asylum and immigration law design, which the opposition politicians call "barbaric", was adopted in the National Assembly.

The new asylum and immigration bill, which caused the reactions in France, was passed by 228 votes to 139, with 24 abstentions, after more than 60 hours of debate over the weekend and hundreds of amendment.

With the new regulation, refugees coming to France are required to apply for asylum within 90 days. Besides, it is aimed that the applicants will be assessed within six months at the latest and finally delivered. The objection application period for refusal of asylum applications is shortened.

The detention period for those who will be deported is extended from 45 days to 90 days. For those who enter the country illegally, there is a penalty of up to one year in prison.

The draft law is expected to be discussed in the Senate in June. According to DW reports, the law design led to reactions in France. Non-governmental organizations criticize the new legislation on the grounds that it weakens the right to asylum. Opposition parties call the law "barbaric".
