Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza dies after suffering a heart attack

Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza, 55, has died of a hearth attack at Karusi hospital, the government announced Tuesday in a statement on Twitter.

Nkurunziza was admitted to hospital on Saturday after reportedly contacting Coronavirus. While his condition was initially said to be improving, he went into cardiac arrest on 8 June and died at the age of 55.

Pierre Nkurunziza served as president of Burundi from 2005 to his death in 2020. Before his election, Pierre Nkurunziza was the Chairman of the National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD).
