Choi-wan storm kills at least 8 people in the Philippines

The death toll from tropical storm Choi-wan has risen to eight, Philippian officials said on Thursday.

At least 15 people, including two children, are still missing, according to local sources.

Tropical storm Choi-Wan made landfall over Sulat, Eastern Samar, the evening of June 1, triggering floods and landslides in the central and southern Philippines.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the Choi-Wan storm affected over 45,000 people in the southern Philippines.

The name Choi-wan has been used to name four tropical cyclones in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The name was contributed by Hong Kong, and means "colorful cloud" in Cantonese. It is also the name of a public housing estate in Hong Kong.
