Death toll increase in the Indonesian tsunami

The number of people who died in the tsunami that occurred in Indonesia's Sunda Strait reached 280 while the number of injured people exceeded thousand.

At least 280 people were killed and more than one thousand people injured in the tsunami took place in Indonesia's Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Javanese islands.

Many people reportedly are still missing while there is worry about the increase in the number of dead and wounded due to the tsunami.

Waves suddenly crashing into an open-air concert

On the other hand, a video posted on social media showed a wall of water suddenly crashing into an open-air concert, hurling group members off the stage and then flooding into the audience.

Singer of the group shared through social media that the band's bassist and road manager had died, and three other band members and his own wife were missing.

More than 400 of buildings were destroyed by the wave, which hit the coast of southern Sumatra and the western tip of Java about 9:30 pm following the eruption of a volcano known as the "child" of the legendary Krakatoa, national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

The tsunami is estimated to occur due to the eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano on the island of Krakatoa.

Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said it recorded a series of tremors and an eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, a volcanic island in the Sunda Strait near Java. But the agency said it was not certain the eruption triggered the tsunami.

The authorities believe that the volcano caused landslide under water. On Friday, the ash cloud formed by the lava-spraying volcano for two minutes and 12 seconds reached up to 400 meters from the peak.

There had been tsunamis before

More than 36,000 people were killed in the tsunami caused by the volcano eruption in Krakatau in 1883. In 2004, the tsunami caused by the earthquake in the Indian Ocean cost the lives of 226 thousand people from 13 countries, including 120,000 in Indonesia.

In September, more than 2,000 people died when a powerful earthquake struck just off the central Indonesian island of Sulawesi, setting off a tsunami that engulfed the coastal city of Palu.
