Emergency state should be lifted: PACE

Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe called Turkiye to "put an end to the emergency state application".

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), which took a decision to postpone the June 24 elections, also called on Ankara to "end the implementation of the emergency state." The decision was accepted by the majority of votes.

The resolution adopted by the PACE in Strasbourg, while the coup attempt in Turkiye harshly condemned. The committee reiterates that it is impossible to hold genuinely democratic elections under the state of emergency and on-going security operations.

It also recalls that these elections will be crucial; this will be the final step for the shift to an executive presidential system, which will grant extensive powers to the President of the Republic while limiting checks and balances.

PACE members of the AK Party deputy Mustafa Yeneroğlu defended the emergency state in Turkiye before the vote in plenary session. PACE "does not know or understand the seriousness of the terrorist threat on Turkiye," he said.

The state of emergency declared after July 15th coup attempt was extended for the seventh time for another three months.
