Erdoğan speaks by phone with Hamas top official

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke Friday by phone with the head of Hamas Political Bureau Ismail Haniyeh.

Haniyeh briefed Erdoğan on developments concerning the Palestinian cause, according to a Hamas statement.

“Hamas wants to unify the Palestinian people and participate in the legislative, presidential, and National Council elections,” noted Haniyeh, confirming that Hamas will form a national unity government with Fatah and other faction even if the movement wins the elections.

The Hamas chief also confirmed that Jerusalem will be an “integral part of the electoral process”, calling on the Turkish president to pressure the Israeli occupation in order not to intervene in the elections.

The Turkish president, in turn, thanked Haniyeh for such endeavors and stressed the need for national unity to strengthen their political positions.
