Feb. 28 victims must be re-trialed: Former President Abdullah Gül

Victims of Feb. 28 should be re-tried said Turkiye's 11th President Abdullah Gül.

Turkiye's 11th President Abdullah Gül stated that the courts, which have directed by briefings, moved away from the fair trial principle and sentenced many people with disproportionate penalties during the Feb. 28 period.

Gül, who proposed to pave a new way to re-trial the victims of Feb. 28, used the following statements in the message he shared on Twitter account for the 21st anniversary of February 28:

"Twenty years have passed since February 28th. The courts, which were directed by briefings at the time of the extraordinary period and moved away from the fair trial principle, sentenced many people with disproportionate penalties. Nearly 600 of these are still prisoners. If the courts open a new way to re-trial these people, they will be able to compensate for justice even it is late."
