Flash floods kill 57 people in Iran

At least 57 people have died because of heavy rains that have been effective for two weeks in Iran.

At least 57 people have died due to floods caused by heavy rains that have been effective for two weeks in Iran's northern, south and southwestern regions.

Thousands of people have been urged to leave their homes in the province of Lorestan as a state of emergency has been declared in several cities.

Flooding has reached the provincial capital, Khorramabad, and has inundated the cities of Poldokhtar, Delfan, Dorood and Ma’mulan.

Flood has also damaged the optical fiber cables in the province of Ilam, disconnecting the province’s telecommunications network.

Heavy rainfall over the past days has caused the rivers in western and southwestern Iran to overflow their banks.

"German Foreign Ministry provides humanitarian assistance to flood victims in Iran. 40 boats and safety equipment will be delivered by German Red Cross to Iranian Red Crescent," Michael Klor Berchtold said in a Twitter message on Monday night.

Record spring rainfall that has battered Iran in recent days has caused serious flooding in many areas, mainly the provinces of Golestan, Lorestan, Khuzestan, Fars, and Ilam, forcing thousands to leave their homes.

Continued rainfall has caused floods in 586 cities and villages across Iran. Floodwater has destroyed infrastructure, livestock, agriculture, and livelihoods, with estimated damage USD 150,000 million, in Golestan and Mazandaran Provinces alone.

Mujtaba Khalidi, a spokesman for the Iranian emergency agency, said 22 of the deceased were from Shiraz, 5 from Mazandaran, 3 from North Horasan, 3 from Kohkiluye Boyer Ahmad, and 5 from Lorestan.
