Four dead as Cyprus battles to contain worst forest fire in its history

The fire broke out in the community of Arakapas on Saturday morning before spreading through a mountainous region near the cities of Limassol and Larnaca.

Four people were found dead close to Odou, a village in the Larnaca District of Cyprus. The victims are believed to be Egyptian nationals.

“All indications point to it being the four missing persons we have been searching for since yesterday,” said interior minister Nicos Nouris.

“It's a tragedy. The largest fire since 1974. Lives, property were lost, tracts of land and forest were destroyed. The government will immediately stand by the victims and the families of the victims. We will not leave anyone abandoned in the devastation of the fire,” tweeted Nicos Anastasiades, the president of southern Cyprus.
