Germany suspends the modernization of tanks in Turkiye

Germany has suspended the modernization of Leopard tanks project under the Turkish Armed Forces till the new government.

The German government spokesman confirmed that the decision regarding the modernization of German-made Leopard tanks in the TAF was suspended.

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel stated that the current government suspended the modernization of tanks sold to Turkiye until the establishment of the new government in Germany.

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, who spoke about Germany's decision to suspend the modernization of Leopard tanks, "A commission would come together related to Leopard tanks. The commission meeting was postponed. There is no suspension or cancellation. Turkiye expects support and solidarity from its ally Germany."

Turkiye demanded for the first time in the last March for the modernization of Leopard tanks, it was alleged that the German government also would grant approval for the modernization of the TAF's leopard tanks.

A debate initiated in Germany on the news that Turkiye use Leopard tanks in Afrin operation, calls were made to the government to halt arms sales to Turkiye.
