Hamas phones Arab and international official to brief them on developments

Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh has phoned many Arab and international officials to brief them on developments concerning the Palestinian cause, especially holding the general elections.

The top Hamas official phoned the Arab League Secretary-General, Qatar's Minister of Foreign Affairs, and top officials in Egyptian Intelligence Service.

Haniyeh highlighted the 'responsible position' adopted by Hamas and Palestinian factions towards holding the general elections.

He considered this move reflective of the Palestinian common sense that unity has to be achieved, and then a Palestinian political system can be established based on partnership and democracy.

"We do not have any option, but to restore unity," Haniyeh mentioned.

The Hamas top official highlighted that Hamas showed flexibility in order to remove the obstacles that hinder organizing vote and stressed that Hamas' position reflects a 'sense of responsibility'.

The Hamas chief mentioned that presidential, legislative, and national council elections should be held in all Palestinian territories, including the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and Jerusalem.

"Hamas will respect the results of the polls if carried out transparently," he confirmed.

The officials contacted by Hamas chief have appreciated Hamas' position, considering this step a critical stage in the history of the Palestinian people. All of them said that they are prepared to help lead the vote to success.

Secretary-General of Arab League Dr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit said that he will send committees to follow up the elections and ensure transparency.

Haniyeh highlighted that he will continue contacting Arab and international bodies to ensure the success of the elections.
