Hike in coronavirus cases might overwhelm Gaza’s health system, expert warns

A sharp rise in coronavirus cases might overwhelm the Gaza Strip’s health system, said Abdelraouf Elmanama, a microbiologist who’s part of the enclave’s pandemic task force.

“Seventy-nine of Gaza’s 100 ventilators have been taken up by COVID-19 victims. In 10 days, the health system will become unable to absorb such a hike in cases and there might be cases that will not find a place at intensive care units,” he warned.

For over 10 years, the people of Gaza have lived under an israeli-imposed blockade that severely limits travel, trade, and everyday life for its over 2 million residents.

Gaza, which is the 3rd most densely populated polity in the world, has reported 14,000 coronavirus cases and 65 deaths since outbreak.
