Sağlam also slammed the United States’ decision to halt funding to the World Health Organization in his weekly statement on foreign agenda.
Sağlam said that the United States, which violates international treaties, continues to be a threat to the whole world, and added that WHO needs to be revised in such a way as to give priority to the works for the health of the world's peoples, independent of political influence and aims.
Racist attitudes towards migrants in the US and Europe
Noting that coronavirus affects migrants the most, Sağlam said: "Coronavirus pandemic negatively affects migrants trying to live in difficult conditions in the US and Europe. 'illegal immigrants' who cannot apply for unemployment benefits in the United States are wanted to be deported by the authorities on the grounds that they will cause the disease to spread. Despite migrant doctors fighting on the front line in the fight against the pandemic, racist attitudes towards migrants are shameful.”
Calling on the international organizations to take urgently action to prevent the ill-treatment and neglect against asylum seekers, Sağlam said: “The fact that immigrants are 'informal' should not lead to different inhumane treatment. Everyone who is deprived of health services, especially migrants held in poor conditions in detention centers, should undergo the necessary health screening, and those who have the disease should be treated.”
The U.S. decision to halt funding to the World Health Organization
Sağlam continued as follows: “The U.S. decision to stop funding the World Health Organization is a reflection of the economic hegemony it has built on international institutions and countries. Accusing the World Health Organization of concealing information about the Covid-19 outbreak, failing to manage the process well and cooperating with China, the United States is pursuing a policy of keeping institutions and countries on their axis through economic blackmail.”
“The United States, which violates international treaties, continues to be a threat to the whole world”
Sağlam said that the World Health Organization needs to be revised independently of political influence and aims, and added: “This decision, taken at a time when global cooperation is most needed to combat the pandemic, makes the global struggle against US interest-oriented politics necessary. The USA, which violates international agreements and tries to steer country and institutional organizations in line with its interests, continues to be a threat to the whole world. Therefore, WHO needs to be revised in such a way as to give priority to the works for the health of the world's peoples, independent of political influence and aims.”
