India: Hospital fire kills 13 covid patients in Maharashtra state

At least 13 covid patients have died in a hospital fire in India’s Maharashtra state as the country faces an unprecedented surge in infections.

According to Indian officials, the fire broke out at around 3 am in the Intensive Care Unit on the second floor of the four-storeyed Vijay Vallabh Hospital.

“13 covid patients have lost their lives so far. Over 90 patients were admitted to the hospital. The patients who are in need of oxygen beds are being transported to other hospitals. The cause of the fire is being investigated,” Dilip Shah, CEO, Vijay Vallabh Hospital said.

The incident comes as India fights the second wave of coronavirus pandemic. The country has reported more than 314,000 fresh cases since yesterday.
