Meteorite found in Mardin

Seeing the meteorite falls in Mardin's central Artuklu district, the citizen gathered about 20 kilos of meteorite after long-term searches.

It was determined that the meteorite falling at the center of Sarıçiçek village of Bingöl on 2 September 2015 also fell to Mardin. Mehmet Nur Kaya, 40-years-old, who sees the fall of the meteorite, left his work and ended up searching these meteorites.

After a long search, Kaya collected about 20 kilograms of meteorite, which the smallest piece of which weighed 10 grams and the largest piece weighing 2 kilos.

Kaya, who kept the meteoroids he had collected, had a new analysis of the stones due to financial possibilities. The analysis revealed that the stone was a meteorite and contained dozens of elements.

Speaking to ILKHA about the subject, Kaya said, "About 2 years ago, while my daughter was sitting in the garden, she saw that the meteor had fallen. She came down and said, 'Dad, I see a plane crashed'. I said, 'We would know if that the plane was falling.' I heard the meteorite fallen in Bingöl the next day, the same as the image that we saw here when we watched the images. 2 days later I started to look for the trace of the meteorite within a week and 10 days and I collected all but needed about 10 thousand TL for the analysis. Then we got money from a friend and we sent an analysis to Ankara. It turned out that the stones we collected on the trial were meteorites."
