“The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is calling an extraordinary open-ended meeting of permanent representatives to the Organization at its Jeddah-based headquarters on 22 August 2021, to discuss the ongoing situation in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan,” the organization said in a statement on Saturday.
In May, the Taliban led a major offensive in Afghanistan during the withdrawal of US troops from the country, which gave them control of over half of Afghanistan's 421 districts as of 23 July 2021.
By mid-August, the Taliban controlled every major city in Afghanistan; following the near seizure of the capital Kabul, the Taliban entered the Presidential Palace after the incumbent President Ashraf Ghani fled Afghanistan to Tajikistan on August 15.
