“The U.S. nuclear weapons in Germany is a danger to the country’s security and should be terminated. Nuclear arms on German territory do not heighten our security, on the contrary. It is time that the country ruled out their deployment in future,” Mützenich said.
The United States has had nuclear weapons in Germany for decades, many dating back to the Cold War, when they were considered as a deterrent against the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
The United States provides about 60 tactical B61 nuclear bombs for use by Germany under a NATO nuclear weapons sharing agreement. The bombs are stored at Büchel Air Base and in time of war would be delivered by Luftwaffe Panavia Tornado warplanes.
