Syrian regime announces ceasefire in Idlib

The Russian Defense Ministry announced Friday that the Syrian regime has declared a ceasefire in the de-escalation zone of Idlib.

Russia announced a ceasefire by the Syrian government forces in the northwestern province of Idlib from Saturday morning.

An agreement was reached on "a unilateral ceasefire by Syrian government forces in the Idlib de-escalation zone, from 6 am on August 31," the Russian Reconciliation Centre for Syria said in a statement.

The ceasefire aimed "to stabilize the situation" in Idlib, the statement said, urging opposition fighters to "abandon armed provocations and join the peace process".

At least 1,282 civilians, including 341 children, reportedly were killed by Russia and regime strikes since the agreement between Turkey and Russia signed in September 2018.
