Tunisian Navy rescues more than 170 migrants, recovers 2 bodies at Sea

Tunisian navy rescued 178 migrants who were trying to cross the Mediterranean from Libya to reach European countries, the country’s Defense Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

“Two bodies were recovered and 178 migrants rescued during three operations off Tunisia’s south coast,” the statement said.

The statement noted that the migrants were from Egypt, Syria, Ivory Coast, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Mali, Ethiopia, and Tunisia.

In 2021, 827 irregular migrants have so far died while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
