Turkey: About 5,000 people killed in traffic accidents last year

In the road network of Turkey, 983 thousand 808 traffic accidents occurred in total during the year 2020, the country’s statistical institute said in a statement on Tuesday.

Among all those accidents 833 thousand 533 accidents were with material loss and 150 thousand 275 were with death or injury. For the accidents involving death or injury, 75.8% of them occurred in inhabited areas and 24.2% occurred in uninhabited areas.

4 thousand 866 persons were killed and 226 thousand 266 persons were injured

As a result of 150 thousand 275 accidents involving death or injury occurred in Turkey during the year 2020, 2 thousand 197 people were killed at the accident scene and 2 thousand 669 people who were injured at traffic accidents and sent to health facilities died within 30 days after the accident due to related accident and its impacts. 47.4% of deaths and 69.2% of injuries occurred in inhabited areas whereas 52.6% of deaths and 30.8% of injuries occurred in uninhabited areas.

The number of persons killed decreased by 11.1% compared to the previous year

In Turkey by year 2020, while total road motor vehicles in traffic increased by 4.3%, there were decreases in total accidents by 15.8%, accidents involving death or injury by 14.1%, accidents with material loss by 16.1%, the total number of persons killed by 11.1%, persons killed at the accident scene by 13.0%, persons killed at accident follow-up by 9.5% and injuries by 20.1%.

In Turkey, 6.2 accidents involving death or injury occurred per thousand vehicles

When number of accidents involving death or injury are analyzed by provinces, accidents per thousand road motor vehicles occurred most at Hakkari and least at İstanbul.

49.4% of the persons killed in traffic accidents were drivers

Among the persons killed in the accidents that occurred in the road network of Turkey during the year 2020, 49.4% of them were drivers, 30.7% were passengers and 19.9% were pedestrians. Concerning the gender breakdown of persons killed 79.7% of them were men and 20.3% were women; whereas for the persons injured 71.4% of them were men and 28.6% were women.

Driver faults were the primary fault causing traffic accidents with 88.3% share

Looking at the 177 thousand 867 total faults causing accidents involving death or injury in Turkey during the year 2020, it was observed that 88.3% of faults were driver faults, 7.0% were pedestrian faults, 2.7% were vehicle faults, 1.4% were passenger faults and 0.5% were road faults.

66.9% of accidents involving death or injury occurred at daytime

Concerning the 150 thousand 275 accidents involving death or injury that occurred in the year 2020 in the road network of Turkey, 66.9% of accidents occurred at day, 30.4% occurred at night and 2.7% occurred at twilight.

49.0% of accidents involving death or injury were two-vehicle accidents

When accidents involving death or injury and their results in the year 2020 are examined by the number of vehicles involved, 49.0% of those accidents were two-vehicle accidents, 45.2% were single-vehicle accidents and 5.8% were multi-vehicle accidents. Within the total number of persons killed, 55.4% were at single-vehicle accidents, 38.8% were two-vehicle accidents and 5.8% were multi-vehicle accidents. Regarding the number of persons injured, 50.4% of them were at two-vehicle accidents, 42.7% of them were at single-vehicle accidents and 6.9% of them were at multi-vehicle accidents.

243 thousand 125 vehicles were involved in accidents with death or injury

In Turkey, the distribution of 243 thousand 125 road motor vehicles involved in accidents with death or injury was cars 50.4%, motorcycles 18.8%, small trucks 15.2%, trucks 2.5%, road tractors 2.4%, minibusses 2.4%, buses 1.6%, tractors 1.2% and the other vehicles 5.5% during the year 2020.

Accidents involving death or injury occurred most in August least in April

In Turkey by the year 2020 looking at the monthly distribution of 150 thousand 275 accidents involving death or injury, accidents most frequently occurred in August with 11.8% share whereas accidents least frequently occurred in April with 3.8% share. Regarding the distribution among the days of the week, accidents involving death or injury most frequently occurred on Friday with 15.5% share and least frequently on Sunday with 12.7% share.
