Turkish police seize 23 kilograms of drugs in a car in Van

Turkish police seize 23 kilograms of drugs in a truck in the İpekyolu district of Turkey’s eastern Van, the Provincial Police Department said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Provincial Police Department Anti- Narcotic Crimes Branch teams stopped a car on suspicion. They seized 23 kilos 105 grams of methamphetamine stashed in 23 pieces during their search in the car,” the statement said.

“One suspect was taken into custody on charges of drug trafficking,” the statement added.

Methamphetamine is a potent central nervous system stimulant that is mainly used as a recreational drug and less commonly as a second-line treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obesity.

The production, distribution, sale, and possession of methamphetamine is restricted or illegal in many countries, including Turkey.

Methamphetamine has been placed in schedule II of the United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances treaty.

Turkey maintains strict laws against the use, possession or trafficking of illegal drugs. If convicted under these offences, one could receive a heavy fine or a prison sentence of 4 to 24 years.
