Turkiye to build 193 new prisons in five years

Turkish Ministry of Justice has announced plans to build 193 new prisons in five years.

Plans to build 193 new prisons within five years due to the "unpredictable increase in the number of convicts and detainees" was announced by the General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses of the Ministry of Justice.

The statement said that 126 of the 193 new criminal execution institutions are under construction, 23 are under tender, 35 are under project and nine are under planning.

There are 389 criminal execution institutions throughout Turkiye as of December 17, 2018, said the statement that the total capacity of these institutions has been reported to be 211 thousand 838 people.
