According to the British medical journal Lancet's research, approximately 2 out of every 5 women who committed suicide in the world are Indian women. In the study, suicide rates in India were reported to be alarming.
According to the study, 71.2 percent of Indian women who committed suicide are in the 15 to 39 age group. Most of them are married women.
According to the study, it is stated that there is not enough research to determine exactly why women commit suicide, although the reasons such as marriage at an early age, being a mother at a young age, domestic violence and economic dependence are cited as reasons for the suicides.
The study also found great differences between the various states of India. The highest suicide rates are in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka states in the south of the country.
In the 1990s, the largest proportion of women's suicides were in China, but as of 2016, suicides decreased by 70 percent. This is largely attributed to the rapid decline in women's suicides in rural China.
