The "red alarm" in Tundzha River

The flood started in the Tundzha River after the torrents and snowmelt in Edirne rose to the level of "red alarm".

As the temperature in Edirne rose to 18-20 degrees Celsius, the flood started in the Tundzha River, rising to the level of "red alarm", with the effect of rainy weather coming from the Balkans and snowmelt.

After the snowmelt, the water flow in the Tundzha River reached 198 cubic meters/second.

Tundzha, with a yellow alarm, came up with a "red alarm" with the last ascension.

Along with the waters coming from Bulgaria, Sarayiçi, where Kırkpınar wrestling was done, was completely flooded. The Edirne Police Department teams closed the historic Kanuni, Fatih and Saraçhane bridges to Sarayiçi to the pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Bulgaria announced that the water level will rise further in Evros and Tundzha rivers during 4 days as of March 9.

The last flood in Edirne was in February of 2015. (ILKHA)
