The way to prevent divorces is to establish an Islamic family structure"
Pointing out the increase in divorces compared to last year, M. Faisal Geylani, Mufti of Bitlis, an eastern province of Turkiye, said that the most effective way to prevent divorce would be to establish an Islamic family structure.
Turkiye's Statistical Institute has announced the marriage and divorce statistics in 2018. While the number of married couples was 569,459 in 2017, it decreased by 2.9 percent in 2018 and became 553,202.
The rate of rough marriage was 6.8 per thousand. While the number of divorced couples was 128,411 in 2017, it increased by 10.9 percent in 2018 to 142,448.
Bitlis Province Mufti M. Faysal Geylani assessed the statistics of Turkstat and pointed out that there are family and social problems in the society in the present day.
Geylani stating that problems in young people are inevitable when children are not given directions at a young age.
"In today's society, there are really a variety of family problems, and social problems," Geylani said while explained the cause of problems, as parents do not fulfill their responsibility at home.
"It is the responsibility of all of us to prevent divorce"
Geylani pointed out that divorces have increased in Turkiye compared to previous years, expressing that everyone is responsible for this.
"Divorces have increased in our country compared to previous years. We are trying to educate our mothers and our 20-year-old students in the Quran course for families. Our teachers are striving in Qur'an courses for education on the right of parents at home, the right of husband on the wife, and the right of wife on the husband."
Geylani underlined that every institution has responsibility on family issues as mufti offices, national education organizations, and NGOs.
Emphasizing the fact that the family formed the core of society, Geylani said that children should be raised with an Islamic morality from a young age.
"So we have to keep the family very strong. The way to keep family strong is this; as parents, we need to educate children from the age of seven in a nice way. At the beginning of the education, we must place the issues of faith in Allah, belief in the hereafter, belief in the prophets, and belief in the books; in other words, we must place faith in the hearts of those children."
Underscoring that if children read the Qur'an, they will learn it there what the right of mother and father is, their duty to elders, their duty to the family.
