Turkish police seize 10 kilograms of drugs in a car in Bitlis

Turkish police seize 10 kilograms of drugs in a truck in Turkey’s eastern Bitlis, the Provincial Police Department said in a statement on Thursday.

“Provincial Police Department Anti- Narcotic Crimes Branch teams stopped a car on suspicion. They seized 10 kilos 600 grams of methamphetamine stashed in 19 pieces during their search in the car,” the statement said.

“One suspect, who was identified by initials E.D., was taken into custody on charges of drug trafficking,” the statement added.

Methamphetamine is a potent central nervous system stimulant that is mainly used as a recreational drug and less commonly as a second-line treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obesity.

The production, distribution, sale, and possession of methamphetamine is restricted or illegal in many countries, including Turkey.

Methamphetamine has been placed in schedule II of the United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances treaty.

Turkey maintains strict laws against the use, possession, or trafficking of illegal drugs. If convicted under these offenses, one could receive a heavy fine or a prison sentence of 4 to 24 years.
