United Kingdom will not extradite WikiLeaks' Julian Assange to United States

A British judge has rejected the United States’ request to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to United States.

District Judge Vanessa Baraitser ruled WikiLeaks' Julian Assange should not be extradited to United States.

The US has long wanted to extradite the 49-year-old to face 17 charges of espionage and one charge of computer misuse over WikiLeaks’ publication of leaked military and diplomatic documents of wrongdoing during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The charges carry a total of up to 175 years in prison.

Julian Paul Assange is an Australian editor, publisher, and activist who founded WikiLeaks in 2006. WikiLeaks came to international attention in 2010 when it published a series of leaks provided by U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning.

These leaks included the Baghdad airstrike Collateral Murder video (April 2010), the Afghanistan war logs (July 2010), the Iraq war logs (October 2010), and Cablegate (November 2010).

After the 2010 leaks, the United States government launched a criminal investigation into WikiLeaks.
